CELBAN is an occupation-specific language test that assesses these core competencies. It is a task-based evaluation of four communication skills – speaking, listening, writing and reading. The test employs familiar scenarios that nurses would encounter in nursing practice to assess candidates' skills in real and relevant contexts. This provides a more complete picture of an IENs communication skills than language testing alone. Research shows that candidates also benefit from occupation-specific assessments. They are more engaged, achieve better results and feel that they learn something from the experience.
Developed and pilot tested by IENs, CELBAN is recognized as proof of language proficiency by all Canadian nursing regulators and is a preferred option for many IENs.
